Winery Review: “This is a fresh style of Merlot, and
super affordable. Bright red-cherry, purple-flower and fresh herb aromas lead
into a juicy palate with just enough texture to hold up the black-cherry and
root-beer-spice flavors.” - Matt Kettmann – 89 – Wine Enthusiast
Wine Folly: Primary flavors include “cherry, plum,
chocolate, bayleaf, vanilla”
I could smell the vanilla and taste the cherry.
My Review:
When first smelling this wine, it reminded me a lot of the
Zinfandel that I had tried two weeks before. It had a very sweet and dessert
forward smell with notes like vanilla and raspberry. It also kind of reminded
me of a permanent or expo marker. However, the wine tasted very different that
it smells. Like the extremely dark color of this wine suggested, it was extremely
tannic, drying out my mouth and making me a bit thirsty. The taste of the wine
was earthy, musty, and oakey, with hints of cherry at the end. It also was a
bit peppery and gave a small burn down the back of my throat. This was a very
thick and full bodied wine, and allow the smell and taste didn’t line up so
well, I still found it very tasty and different.
Tastes on its own with no food, but with friends.
